Do I Need a VPN to Access The Pirate Bay?

771

The Pirate Bay is a brilliant resource for films, music, and books. As one of the most popular and long-standing BitTorrent websites, it utilizes peer-to-peer file-sharing technology. However, getting connected to the site can be a bit of a nightmare. That’s because your internet service provider (ISP) could be blocking traffic to the site to prevent the risk of perceived copyright infringement. They might also block access to control the volume of data you’re downloading

So, you need a way of accessing The Pirate Bay without all the hassle. Your first thought might be to use a VPN. In this article, we’ll take a look at whether that’s your best option or whether using a proxy site might provide a better way of torrenting the files you need.

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for virtual private network, and when it’s in place, then you can surf the internet with privacy and anonymity. This is achieved by the creation of a private network that masks your IP address. In turn, your online activity is then pretty much untraceable

How Does a VPN Work?

The VPN creates a data tunnel that runs from your network through to an exit node in a location that could be thousands of miles away from where you’re actually online.

VPNs also use encryption to scramble the data sent across the Wi-Fi network. If you spend time online using a public network such as those found in hotels or airports, then using a VPN also prevents anyone else from eavesdropping on what you’re up to while online.

Without using a VPN, your internet service provider will have a complete history of every site you visit and the pages that you have viewed. Then there are the issues related to your location and your ability to stream and download files. Many countries have banned sites such as The Pirate Bay, and so that means that you need another way of accessing its contents.

The Issues With Using a VPN

1. Using a VPN can decrease your speed

Because the VPN is rerouting and allertaprivacy, it may mean that the connection speed reduces. Now, this probably isn’t a problem for day-to-day surfing, but if you’re using a VPN to access The Pirate Bay, then it might cause problems when torrenting.

2. The risk of being blocked by some services

Some sites actively block what they believe to be VPN connections. Netflix, for example, blocks IP addresses when a large number of connections simultaneously try to connect to their site. This is because when you’re using a VPN server, you’re sharing it with other users, and so that means the same IP address. That makes it really easy for them to spot who is using a VPN and who isn’t.

3. VPNs are illegal in some countries

While VPNs can be used in most countries with no problems, there are exceptions. Some countries, like China, only allow the use of government-approved VPNs. While in other countries, such as North Korea, the use of a VPN is completely banned.

4. Not all VPNs are created equally

You might assume that a VPN provider would not log your data, but this isn’t always the case. Of course, it will state this somewhere deep in the terms and conditions, but if you’re like us, then you probably don’t read every word of that twelve-page agreement!

Then there are the VPNs that promise not to log your data but do it anyway. This was what was found in the case of DoubleVPN, who was also associated with criminal activity.

So, What’s the Alternative to a VPN?

As you can see, a VPN is not necessarily the best way to access The Pirate Bay. So, what alternatives are there? The main option open to you is to use a site that publishes a list of proxy sites.

A proxy site is an intermediate server that requests data from a site that’s not accessible and then provides you with that data to help you access the site. This then means that the site that was blocked is now accessible internetprivatsphare

So, that means that there really is no need to pay for a VPN service that might not even provide the service you need. All you need to do is to go to a proxy site, and you can get all the torrents you want directly from The Pirate Bay without all the hassles!
